Should I take the SAT?

  • We recommend that all students take the SAT at least once.
  • Many colleges have reinstated the SAT testing policy for acceptance into their school.
  • Ms. Hoskey, City High’s Transition Manager, will be available to talk to students and families about the SAT at City High during Parent/Teacher conferences on Monday, February 17th, 2025.
  • There will be other SAT tests offered at a variety of testing locations throughout Pittsburgh. Upcoming Saturday dates include May 3rd, 2025 and June 7th, 2025.  For a list of dates, visit this site.

SAT Test Takers:

  • Testing will be in-person at City Charter High School on March 3rd, 2025.
  • All City High SAT test takers must arrive at school by 8:30 am.
  • Students that signed up for the SAT but do not show up to school on the testing date, will miss the test.

  • All participating students will use City High’s calculators on test day
  • Phones smartwatches, fitness trackers, or other wearable technology, as well as bluetooth and and other electronic devices, are prohibited in the testing room and not accessible during test breaks

Timing & Section Breakdown:

  • The digital SAT is composed of two sections: Reading and Writing and Math.
    • Section 1: Reading and Writing. Students have 64 minutes (two 32-minute modules) to complete this section
    • 10-minute break between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section
    • Section 2: Math. Students will have 70 minutes (two 35-minutes modules) to complete this section
  • Total testing time: 2 hours and 14 minutes
  • Total estimated time with breaks: 3 hours (this allows for time to distribute and collect materials)
  • Students will not leave the testing room except for breaks until the testing time is complete.

Scoring:

  • The SAT is scored on a 400 to 1600 scale.
  • Scores for the SAT are generally available 2–3 weeks after the test administration date.
  • Students will receive an email at the address associated with their College Board account when their scores are available.

Taking the test again:

  • Students can DEFINITELY take the SAT a second time but it will NOT be offered at City High.

  • Students that want to take the test a second time will get help registering from Ms. Hoskey and she will review all of the procedures with you.

  • Students can meet with the Transition Manager to discuss their score after they receive it and decide then whether or not they want/need to take the test a second time.

  • Students that want to take the ACT can do so and Transition Managers will help them register for that test as well; however; the ACT is not offered at City High.
