Rayona Taylor—The Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel

Sage Hospitality who operates the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of its guests, associates, investors and the communities where they live and work. So Pittsburgh is very lucky to have them. And so is City High. This leading hospitality management company is all about creating opportunities in an urban environment, so City High was a good fit. According to HR Director Heather Ann Urban, “We first found out about City High through someone we hired who had come from there. He was amazing. With our corporate mission to ‘Adopt an Urban School’ and make a difference to the community, City high became that school.” The internship program at the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel is very well defined. There is a 13-week cycle and students are rotated through all departments: Human Resources, Accounting, Housekeeping, Engineering, In-Room Dining, Bell Stand/Concierge, Front Door, Front Desk, Delighted-To-Serve/Phone Operator, Banquet, Sales and finally, the student’s choice in the last week. The most recent intern at the hotel is student Rayona Taylor. “She is self-motivated.” Says Urban. “If there is nothing else to do she goes right back to another task. She is a joy to have. She’s been a stellar intern and ‘she gets it’! The employees look forward to having her in their department.” Which is the best endorsement of all. As a rule, the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel only chooses interns from colleges. So it’s a real feather in City High’s cap that we have had three interns at this prestigious hotel in the Fulton Building, one previous intern even got an offer for a full-time job. From Ms. Urban’s perspective, “A City High internship is one of the best community givebacks. City High has helped us as much as we have helped them.”
