MALAKI SPOTLIGHT

Malaki Davis’ passion for data organization and tracking made him the perfect candidate for his internship with the City of Pittsburgh Department of City Planning. Under the mentorship of Richard Meritzer, ADA Coordinator, Malaki earned 146 hours observing how reports were compiled, proofed and submitted. He was amazed at the in-depth accounting systems, especially when used to generate reports. Malaki was also introduced to budget management, survey analysis and financial research. He especially enjoyed the opportunity to be involved with an audit draft and to help with monitoring funds processing.

Additionally, Malaki was given the opportunity to work in the field with his internship associate verifying that structures were disability accessible and met the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. He was further privileged to attend an accounting seminar at Point Park University during his internship.

From start to finish, Malaki was excited to see how an accounting degree translates into a real-world work environment. The internship provided him with a better picture of the many jobs that an accounting degree might afford him, and Malaki is now solidly looking at a career in the accounting field.

The City High Difference

For Malaki, the connection formed between teachers and their students was a big difference from other high schools. He noted that while the class work is harder at City High, the experience is greater. He also appreciates the assistance that City High provides its students as they try to plan their post-high school future.

The Pittsburgh Promise

Malaki, like 94% of his City High classmates is also eligible to receive The Pittsburgh Promise Scholarship that is based on GPA, attendance and Pittsburgh residency. Malaki is currently looking at Gwynedd Mercy University, Chestnut Hill College or Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with plans to achieve a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Upon graduation from college Malaki hopes to work in a public firm.
