STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Under the mentorship of Activities Director Donnie Scruggs and the direct supervision of Activities Assistant Anna Vogel, Teaira Jones earned 152 internship hours at UPMC Canterbury Place. With interests in restorative health, physical therapy and speech pathology, Teaira spent her time engaged in a variety of initiatives adopted by the Activities Department.  Because of the holistic approach to care, Teaira was also given the opportunity to work with and observe Canterbury Place’s many different care providers including Diane, Suzanne, Nikia, Nicola and Anna.

Teaira’s favorite portion of the internship was interacting with the residents suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or stroke and the chance to learn about their life experiences and life lessons. She also appreciated Canterbury Place’s socialization events, specialized use of games to improve cognition and the opportunity to attend in-service training for memory care.

Teaira expects to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania with interest in their speech-language pathology program. She is also contemplating pursuing a major under their College of Health and Human Services.  One of Teaira’s most valuable learning experiences at Canterbury Place was discovering the differences between physical therapy and restorative/occupational therapy. This indispensable knowledge will help shape her collegiate plans.
